Welcome to the Department of Parks and Recreation

 “Celebrating 30 Years of Recreation”

The Department of Parks & Recreation’s main responsibility is to provide recreational opportunities for all our residents!  Enrichment and leisure classes provide our community ways to improve and maintain a healthier and more active lifestyle.  Maintaining our current 197 acres of parkland along with improving our Community Center is the goal of all our staff members.

Join us any evening of the week for a variety of classes.  Everything from children’s gymnastics, Yoga, Tai Chi, Self Defense, Aquacise, Pilates and Zumba, a latin dance experience.  During daytime hours you will find tot classes, aerobics, Fitness for 55+ and much more.

Our center is also the home of the Woodhaven Senior Citizen’s Organization.  We provide travel and leisure opportunities specifically tailored to the needs of our senior population.  We provide transportation with two vehicles, a 23 passenger bus and a specialty van with wheelchair lifts for essential errands such as doctor’s appointments and grocery shopping.

Special events for the residents are also planned through our Department.  Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Daddy/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Event, Hallohaven, Supper with Santa and our Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony are the highlights.

This year, with the help of Wayne County, we were able to start a food assistance program for families and with donations from local businesses a Food Pantry for Woodhaven Seniors.

Every year, we strive to expand our services and recreational opportunities for our residents!

Department Hours:

Kathy D’Angelo has been a resident of Woodhaven for 23 years.   Kathy began her experience with Woodhaven while serving on the board of the 25th Anniversary Celebration which was held in September of 1991.  Her next position with the City was as a Recreation Commissioner from 1996-1998.

Upon graduating from Wayne County Community College with an Associates Degree in Business Administration in 1994, she began working full time as a Human Resource Director for the Rivergate Terrace Nursing Home.  Directly before her position with the City, D’Angelo worked for three years as an Enrichment Coordinator for the Township of Grosse Ile.

In 1998, Kathy became a full time employee of the City as a Senior Coordinator/Administrative Assistant.  Her experience working with seniors, supervising staff members, business background and public recreational experience was a good match for the position.  Kathy has served on The Senior Alliance Area Agency of Aging Board, Downriver Senior Olympic Board of Directors, President of the Pilot Club of Greater Downriver and on the Convention Committee for the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association in Lansing.

She was appointed Director of Parks and Recreation in October of 2006.

Kathy is a member of the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association and has attended the Leadership Institute for Professional Development sponsored by MRPA.
